Immersion is an almost overused term in the Gaming Industry for how deeply a game can suck the player in. Much (not all) of today’s industry is convinced that the pinnacle of immersion means recreating a true-to-life experience. The game would have to accurately portray sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and textures and emotionally convince the player that what they are experiencing is totally real.
As AAA studios strive to create the most immersive FPS game there is, they are severely limited by the tools and hardware available to them. It’s difficult to get smells and tastes out of an Xbox or a PS3 (unless there’s something seriously wrong), so studios usually have to settle.
In the video above, we have a great example of what happens when gamers with the time and resources desire the absolute pinnacle of immersion.
How I would love to play in one of these. Just once, perhaps. Just for the experience.
…SIKE, I want one in my backyard. Anyone else want one? Can anyone build me one?
